Schedule of Public Meetings - City of Wildwood - Week of December 10, 2018
Ready 2 Recycle @ Wildwood

WILDWOOD RECYCLING UPDATE

As reported to you a few weeks ago, Resource Management’s Earth City Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) notified our service provider, Meridian Waste, that as of November 1, 2018, they were closing and no longer accepting single-stream recyclables collected curbside from residential customers, which includes Wildwood residents.  The closure of the Earth City MRF, which was in part due to worldwide issues with contamination levels seen in single-stream recycling, has disrupted the local recycling market and the operations of waste haulers that were using the facility, including Meridian.   In response, the City of Wildwood and many other municipalities are transitioning to a dual-stream approach, which involves some separation of recyclables at the home, with certain items collected at the curb and others taken to identified drop-off locations.  Until this program is established, Meridian Waste is continuing to collect single-stream recycling at the curb and transporting the recyclables to another recycling facility outside of our area.

Previously, it was reported that the dual-stream program would begin on January 1, 2019, but as the City continues to work with Meridian Waste on establishing the most convenient dual-stream program it can, those negotiations have resulted in deferring the start of the program until February 1, 2019. Therefore, between now and February 1, 2019, residents may continue to recycle as they have been accustomed to doing previously.

The current recommended approach for the dual-stream recycling program, which will be reviewed by the City Council on December 10, 2018, is as follows:
The following materials will continue to be collected curbside weekly:

  • Plastics containers containing the recycling code 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 (non-black)

  • Aluminum

  • Tin and steel cans

The following materials will be collected curbside bi-weekly (every other week) in a separate smaller bin to be provided by Meridian Waste:

  • Corrugated papers (cardboard)

  • Mixed papers

If residents wish to recycle glass, Meridian Waste will be establishing a few drop-off locations throughout Wildwood.  Otherwise, glass may be discarded with the regular trash.

The cost of the new program will result in an increased cost of $2.66/month, until August 1, 2019 when a new long-term contract is established through a competitive bidding process.

Once the program has been finalized, residents will receive a letter from the City of Wildwood describing the program in more detail.  In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact us at recycling@cityofwildwood.com.

“Wildwood 2020”

Mayor Bowlin announced his vision plan for the City of Wildwood during the City Council Work Session held on Monday, October 9, 2017.  The plan was developed based on input from residents and other stakeholders, and calls for improving residential experience and a renewed focus on the City’s original plans, said Mayor Bowlin.

“I’m very committed to things that benefit our residents and businesses, and there’s so much we can do to make Wildwood even better for them. My plan incorporates ways to make that happen with optimal cost efficiency,” said the Mayor. The plan includes several proposed projects that will benefit residents in all eight wards, along with implementation guidelines that include resident participation and input.

High-Speed Internet to the Rural Areas of Wildwood

At the Rural Internet Access Committee's (RIAC) last meeting on November 1, 2018, members discussed the progress the two (2) providers that currently offer high-speed internet access service to the rural areas of Wildwood have made over the past few months. These providers, Bays ET and Wisper ISP, are both actively adding new capacity and increasing speeds to their respective networks. Along with these improvements to the networks, reliability efforts have also been redoubled by both providers. If you have not thought about obtaining internet access from one (1) of these two (2) providers over past concerns about service, reliability, and speeds, you may want to check back with them and hear about the improvements they have made for Wildwood residents. Bays ET and Wisper ISP can be contacted at the following telephone numbers: Bays ET (serves the south half of the City) -  (636) 334-9353 and Wisper ISP (serves the north half of the City) - 1 (800) 765-7772.
